Five Famous Steps

The other day I attended a Mary Kay Cosmetics party. It had been a long time since I had been to one and since I had always loved the product, I was game. Years ago I had been a Mary Kay Consultant and enjoyed it very much. As a consultant I learned a lot about skin care, salesmanship and running my own business. It was a stepping stone for me and I’m glad I had the experience even though I’m still sort of mystified as to how it happened.  I became a skin care consultant through a series of unlikely events. Unlikely because I didn’t really like going to sales parties and didn’t think I was interested in having my own business. I would have never sought out the Mary Kay Opportunity but it happened anyway. I realize, in retrospect, that time of my life was no fluke.

Once I committed to the idea, I slipped into my ‘over achiever’ mode. Mary Kay is perfect for over achiever perfectionists. I wasn’t satisfied with just attending meetings and learning by watching my director give parties. I went to the Library and borrowed many books about the biology of skin, and researched skin care. I wanted to be able to know…to understand what I was selling and to be informative. I rehearsed my routine and practiced on friends. It did come as a shock to me, but I liked being in Mary Kay, for many reasons.

One of the reasons was the skin care routine we taught. The products were used to cleanse, retexture, freshen, moisturize and protect. The mantra we repeated along with the routine was “consistency is the key to beauty.” Sure, our skin felt wonderful even after just one use, but even more so, if the skin care regimen was used consistently. Time and time again customers reported back about their transformations. They felt beautiful and confident. They smiled more. They bounded with energy and their friends and family noticed the change. It made me feel good, too.

One day I had an “AH HA” moment when I realized that Mary Kay’s Five Basic Steps also applied to our Christian walk. The Five Famous Steps are the basic building blocks of both good skin and a glowing relationship with Christ. In both cases, when we commit, our faith and confidence grows.

Below is an outline of the parallels between Mary Kay’s Five Basic Steps and God’s plan.

Mary Kay’s Five Basic Steps
God’s Five Basic Steps
MK CLEANSE: In the Mary Kay routine we tell our guests that the cleanser is especially designed for your skin type to rid your skin of surface oil, impurities and make-up.

GOD's CLEANSE: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to CLEANSE us from all unrighteousness.  (I John 1:9)  It doesn’t matter what grime you have experienced. HE can wash it all away. Christ is right for all types.
MK MASK/RETEXTURE:  Apply twice a week to deep clean your pores, exfoliate dead skin cells and help reveal the next layer of new fresh skin.

GOD's RETEXTURE: Hardships that come our way cause us to EXFOLIATE the dead things in our lives and allows the new life in us to rise to the top. We are forced to take a good look at the things we are trying to hold on to and learn to LET GO. Hebrews 12:6
MK FRESHEN: Use the freshener after retexturizing or cleansing to complete the cleansing process.  This closes the pores, prepares the skin for moisture balance, and refreshes the skin.

GOD's FRESHEN: The Holy Spirit REFRESHES us in our worship with HIM.  Acts 3:19 says that we are refreshed in the presence of the Lord. In worship, whether it is prayer, singing, or actions of love, the Lord closes wounds and soothes us. The places that were exfoliated are comforted and healed.
MK MOISTURIZE: Apply after freshening to help skin maintain its optimum moisture balance. It corrects skin that is over dry or oily.  It helps our skin stay smooth and supple.

GOD's MOISTURIZE:  Reading the Word gives correction, direction and helps us to maintain our spiritual balance. By His Word, we learn to trust and when we trust in God, there is balance in our lives. When we KNOW Him, we can maintain the steadiness he provides. He asks us not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. (Romans 12:2) When we read the Word and listen to his voice we grow in faith.
MK PROTECT: The foundation guards against environmental elements and gives the skin an even-toned smooth finish.

GOD's PROTECT: Christ protects us. He does not leave us to fend for ourselves.  He gives us ARMOR (Ephesians 6:10-18) which is His Word, Spirit, Righteousness, Truth and Peace. He shields us from all the elements and is the foundation for our confidence.
MK REMEMBER: Consistency is the key to BEAUTY

GOD's REMEMBER: Consistency is the key to BEAUTY in  the Lord.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit....
